Under Fire

It is 1979. The Somoza regime is cracking apart and the foreign press has flooded into Managua to document it. Photographer Russell Price (Nolte) has always kept his camera between himself and the story — until the gap between what he sees through his lens and what he knows to be true becomes too wide to hold. His colleague Alex Gale (Hackman) takes a lucrative contract and leaves; Russell and Claire (Cassidy) are left behind.

Ed Harris appears in a small, quietly chilling role as a mercenary operating in the conflict's margins. Spottiswoode frames the film as a question about where professional neutrality ends — in 1983 it read as a pointed critique of US policy in Central America, and it has not aged out of relevance.
