Synopsis

A senior colleague, Judge Caulfield (Hal Holbrook), draws Hardin into a private society of judges who handle matters themselves. Douglas plays neither hero nor villain — a man who mistakes a shortcut for a principle — and the film is sharpest in the scenes where that distinction blurs.
