Synopsis

Red Beard (赤ひげ, 1965) is a drama by Akira Kurosawa you can watch online on iFILM, starring Toshiro Mifune in the title role — the last film the two made together. Three hours long, shot in black and white, and unlike almost everything else Kurosawa made: no swords, no battles, just medicine and human dignity.

Fresh out of school, young Dr. Yasumoto expected an appointment with a wealthy patron. He gets a rundown public clinic on the outskirts of Edo instead, run by a doctor everyone calls Red Beard — blunt, demanding, indifferent to complaints. Yasumoto refuses to cooperate, breaks rules, makes his contempt visible. Red Beard doesn't argue back. He just keeps working, case after case, with patients who have nowhere else to go. That patience turns out to be more corrosive to Yasumoto's arrogance than any confrontation.

Kurosawa spent two years in production on this film, building entire sets to scale, and Mifune plays his character as a man whose authority comes entirely from will and quiet conviction rather than force. The film picked up the Silver Bear at Berlin in 1965 and has never really left the conversation about what humanist cinema can do. Stream Red Beard (1965) online on iFILM.
