Synopsis
Rhapsody in August (1991) is a late Akira Kurosawa drama you can watch online on iFILM. One summer near Nagasaki, an old woman named Kane keeps house for her four grandchildren while a long-buried memory slowly rises to the surface.
The kids pepper their grandmother with questions about the morning the sky burned and her husband never came home. To them it's a chapter in a textbook; to her it's a wound that never closed. Then a half-American nephew, Clark (Richard Gere), turns up from Hawaii, the son of the brother who left Japan decades earlier. What follows is less a plot than a quiet reckoning: two branches of one family, split by war and an ocean, feeling their way toward an apology no one quite knows how to make.
Kurosawa shot this at eighty-one, near the end of his run, trading the battlefield scale of Ran for something small and almost transparent. No speeches, no blame, just children, a grandmother, a thunderstorm over the hills, and ants climbing a single rose. It's one for viewers who love the master's hushed late work more than his samurai epics. Stream Rhapsody in August (1991) online on iFILM.
