Synopsis
Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016) is a comedy-drama from director Malcolm D. Lee, available to watch online on iFILM. Ice Cube returns as Calvin, owner of the storied shop on Chicago's South Side, a decade older and facing a neighborhood that has changed around him.
To keep the lights on, Calvin has merged the barbershop with a beauty salon next door, so the old all-male hangout now buzzes with women trading just as many opinions as the men. Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Eve, Anthony Anderson and rapper Nicki Minaj fill the chairs, and nobody holds back on anything. Underneath the banter sits real worry: gang violence is climbing, Calvin fears for his teenage son, and the crew hatches a bold plan to take the block back themselves.
The film moves between barbershop trash-talk and a serious conversation about violence in Chicago, and that blend is its strength. The chair-side dialogue never lets up, yet the social weight keeps it from playing as a lecture. A solid pick if you like laughs that share space with something that actually matters.
