Synopsis
The White Crow (2018) is a biographical drama directed by Ralph Fiennes — watch it online on iFILM. The film tracks Rudolf Nureyev across three time periods at once: a poor childhood in Ufa where ballet was his only escape, the rigid world of 1950s Leningrad under his mentor Alexander Pushkin, and the 1961 Paris tour where a KGB handler and a boarding call pushed him toward one split-second decision. Ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko plays Nureyev; Adèle Exarchopoulos and Chulpan Khamatova appear alongside him.
Fiennes is less interested in the glory of the stage than in what it costs to be impossible to control. Nureyev clashes with teachers, colleagues, tour supervisors — everyone who needs him to stay in line. The Paris sequences build a genuine pressure: each day of the tour brings tighter surveillance, and the audience already knows what happens at the airport.
What makes the film stick is that it never softens the man. He is talented, rude, hungry for the West, and not particularly likeable — which makes the final minutes far more loaded than any triumph-of-the-spirit ending would be. Stream The White Crow (2018) online on iFILM.
