Synopsis
Mister Lonely (2008) is an arthouse tragicomedy from Harmony Korine that you can watch online on iFILM. A young American scrapes a living on the streets of Paris as a Michael Jackson impersonator, until the day he meets a woman performing as Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn whisks him off to Scotland, to a castle commune where everyone lives as someone else: Charlie Chaplin, the Pope, the Queen, Abraham Lincoln, Shirley Temple. They have all traded their own names for borrowed faces, and now they're rehearsing a grand show meant to finally draw an audience. Far away, a second and frankly absurd thread unfolds: a nun tumbles out of a plane over Panama, lands without a scratch, takes it for a miracle, and starts coaxing the other sisters to jump without parachutes too.
Korine chases mood over plot here — a sad, odd and unexpectedly tender meditation on what it costs to spend your life wishing you were someone else. Diego Luna and Samantha Morton anchor the cast, with directors Werner Herzog and Leos Carax turning up in roles alongside France's Denis Lavant. It won't be for everyone: slow, plotless by design, strictly for fans of meditative cinema. But if that wavelength is yours, Mister Lonely lingers. Stream the film (2008) online on iFILM.
