Synopsis
Disgrace (2008) is an Australian-South African drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Steve Jacobs from J.M. Coetzee's Booker Prize-winning novel. John Malkovich plays David Lurie, a Cape Town literature professor who throws away his career over a brief affair with a student and gets exactly what that earns him.
Stripped of his position, Lurie retreats to his daughter Lucy's smallholding in the remote Eastern Cape — expecting to regroup, finding something harder instead. Post-apartheid South Africa in its raw, unresolved form: land disputes, simmering resentment, sudden violence. He arrives as a man used to having authority; he leaves without it.
Malkovich plays Lurie without a drop of sentimentality, which is what Coetzee's novel demands and what makes the film genuinely uncomfortable to sit with. Stream Disgrace (2008) online on iFILM.
