Synopsis
Escape from Pretoria (2020) is a prison thriller directed by Francis Annan — watch it online on iFILM. South Africa, 1978. Tim Jenkin and Stephen Lee, two white ANC activists, are handed long sentences for distributing anti-apartheid leaflets and locked inside Pretoria Central Prison.
The courts offer no way out. Jenkin — played by Daniel Radcliffe — starts carving wooden keys by hand, working from brief glimpses of the guards' key rings. It takes years, and more than a dozen keys, each one a small act of precision under permanent surveillance. Daniel Webber plays Lee, and Ian Hart fills the role of a veteran prisoner whose support comes with quiet doubts.
The film draws directly from Jenkin's own account of his 1979 escape. The tension here is not built from chases or violence — it comes from watching a man whittle his way to freedom one millimetre at a time, knowing that any single mistake ends everything.
