The Garden of Sinners: Remaining Sense of Pain

The Garden of Sinners: Remaining Sense of Pain (2008) is a dark supernatural anime you can watch online on iFILM. July 1998: a gang of delinquents turns up dead in their hideout, limbs twisted and torn as if wrenched apart from the inside. Mage Touko Aozaki takes the case and pulls in Shiki Ryougi, a young woman whose eyes can read the lines of death in anything alive or otherwise.

The prime suspect is Fujino Asagami, a quiet schoolgirl who was the same gang's plaything until recently. Made by studio ufotable and running a tight 56 minutes, this third chapter adapts Kinoko Nasu's novel, with director Mitsunaru Obunai steering it away from a straight whodunit toward a meditation on pain, the limits of forgiveness, and what it costs to be wired differently from everyone else. Maaya Sakamoto voices Shiki and Mamiko Noto voices Fujino, and their clash rides on two broken personalities rather than gore, scored by Yuki Kajiura.
