Synopsis
Burden (2018) is a drama based on true events you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Andrew Heckler. Garrett Hedlund plays Mike Burden — an orphan raised inside the Ku Klux Klan in Laurens, South Carolina, who helps open a KKK museum in a historic downtown theater.
A relationship with Judy (Andrea Riseborough), a single mother outside that world, pushes him toward leaving. He does — and immediately has nothing: no home, no allies, no protection. Reverend David Kennedy (Forest Whitaker), the pastor of a local Black congregation, takes Mike, Judy, and her son in, over the objections of people with reasonable grounds for refusing. Tom Wilkinson plays the mentor Mike is walking away from, the film's sharpest source of tension. The picture took the Sundance Audience Award in 2018, and the result tracks: it doesn't smooth over redemption or spare anyone involved in the telling. Stream it on iFILM.
