Synopsis
Battles Without Honor and Humanity (仁義なき戦い, 1973) is Kinji Fukasaku's brutal yakuza epic, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Hiroshima lies in ruins after the surrender. Demobilized soldier Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara) throws a punch in a black-market brawl, lands in prison, and walks out into the ranks of a brand-new crime family.
What follows is twenty years of clan warfare. Bosses swear blood oaths and break them by morning, foot soldiers turn on their own leaders, and a truce can collapse over a single insult. Fukasaku shoots it with a jittery handheld camera and freeze-frame captions that flash each gangster's name and death date right over the gunfire, like a police bulletin instead of a movie.
The screenplay grew out of a real convict's prison memoirs serialized in a newspaper, which is why there's no honor and no glamour here — just small, vicious, doomed men. The film kicked off a five-part Toei saga and tore up the genre's rulebook. If Goodfellas is your thing and you want to see where Asian crime cinema got its teeth, start here.
