Synopsis
Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Proxy War (1973) is the third entry in Kinji Fukasaku's yakuza series — watch online on iFILM. The Muraoka family, the dominant crime clan of Hiroshima, loses its heir to a daytime street shooting. Every ambitious boss in the city immediately starts maneuvering.
Shozo Hirono — Bunta Sugawara again, the throughline of the whole series — tries to stay out of the succession fight. He can't. Alliances form and collapse within the same scene. Fukasaku keeps the camera running and lets the betrayals stack up without editorializing.
The full Battles series, five Toei films across 1973–1974, dismantled what Japanese gangster cinema thought it was. Before Fukasaku, screen yakuza were near-samurai with codes and honor; here they're small men with inflated egos and convenient guns. Proxy War is the most crowded installment in terms of factions and deals, but that crowded chaos is exactly the point. Stream Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Proxy War (1973) on iFILM.
