Synopsis
The Last Detail (1973) is a dark comedy-drama directed by Hal Ashby that you can watch online on iFILM. Jack Nicholson plays career sailor Buddusky, loud and profane and alive in a way that makes you feel every other character in the film is sleepwalking.
Two Navy men are handed a routine escort job: take 18-year-old Larry Meadows from Norfolk to a military prison in Boston. Larry got eight years for trying to pocket forty bucks from a charity box. Buddusky and his partner Mulhall decide the kid deserves at least one good stretch of time before the bars close behind him, so they spend several days across the Northeast letting him eat, drink, and be anything other than a prisoner.
Robert Towne wrote the screenplay — the same year he delivered Chinatown. All three leads, Nicholson, Otis Young, and Randy Quaid, picked up acting prizes at Cannes. The film doesn't dress up what it's about: an institution that grinds people down without anyone meaning harm. Stream The Last Detail (1973) online on iFILM.
