Synopsis

Wit (2001) is Mike Nichols' HBO drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Emma Thompson plays Vivian Bearing, a fierce, brilliant literature professor who has spent her career dissecting John Donne's poems about death. Now death has come for her.

The diagnosis is stage-four ovarian cancer, inoperable. Vivian agrees to eight rounds of brutal experimental chemotherapy, and the hospital room becomes her final lecture hall. She speaks straight to the camera with the same dry edge she used in class, even as her body gives out and the doctors — Christopher Lloyd among them — treat her more as a research case than a patient. Her one real comfort is a kind nurse, Susie, played by Audra McDonald.

Adapted from Margaret Edson's Pulitzer-winning play, the script was written by Nichols together with Thompson herself. The film rests almost entirely on one performance, and it ranks among her very best: no sentimentality, just a sharp mind meeting the one thing it cannot outargue. A hard, honest watch about knowledge bowing to plain human kindness. Stream Wit (2001) online on iFILM.
