Frances

Frances (1982) is Graeme Clifford's biographical drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Jessica Lange carries the whole film. Sam Shepard plays the man who keeps trying to pull her back; Kim Stanley is the mother whose devotion curdles into betrayal. At well over two hours, it rarely lets you breathe.

Drawn from a real life, the story works because it refuses easy melodrama and lands on one hard idea: it was simpler to call Farmer mad than to admit she was right.
