Synopsis
The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) is an American romantic comedy directed by Michael Lehmann that you can watch online on iFILM, starring Janeane Garofalo and Uma Thurman. Abby Barnes hosts a popular call-in radio show about pets — sharp, funny, genuinely useful. Callers love her. She just doesn't think much of herself.
When photographer Brian (Ben Chaplin) asks to meet her after a memorable on-air exchange, Abby panics and sends her neighbour Noelle — tall, blonde, exactly what Abby thinks she isn't — in her place. The two women keep up the deception across phone calls and in-person meetings, while Brian falls for both of them simultaneously without quite knowing it. Jamie Foxx has an early supporting role as Abby's co-worker.
What makes the film work is Garofalo's refusal to play Abby as pathetic. The character is witty and self-aware — she just can't get out of her own way. That specificity keeps the comedy from sliding into easy sentiment. Stream The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) on iFILM.
