Synopsis
The King and I (1999) is an animated musical you can watch online on iFILM. This family-friendly cartoon reworks the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage show, directed by Richard Rich. Widowed Welsh teacher Anna Leonowens sails to far-off Siam with her young son to tutor the children of a proud, headstrong king.
King Mongkut and his new governess butt heads from the start. He rules by his own customs; she arrives with English manners and lessons. Their stubborn clash slowly warms into respect. The trouble comes from the Kralahome, the royal first minister, who resents an outsider's sway over the court and turns to trickery and sorcery to be rid of Anna and her boy.
This screen version trims the musical for kids, tossing in a talking baby elephant, a friendly dragon and a magic subplot the original never had. The songs survive, "Getting to Know You" among them. It's the gentle pick for a family movie night when you want tunes and adventure without the grown-up weight of the live-action film. Stream The King and I (1999) online on iFILM.
