Synopsis
Prison (Fängelse, 1949) is an early Ingmar Bergman drama you can watch online on iFILM — the first feature he scripted himself, and the one where his real concerns first surface. Seventy-five minutes, black and white, no softening.
An old mathematics teacher pitches a film director (Hasse Ekman) on a single idea: the Devil has declared Earth to be hell. The director declines. Then he meets Britta (Doris Svedlund), a young woman with nowhere left to go, and the pitch starts to sound less abstract.
Looking back from Bergman's later career — The Seventh Seal, Persona, Silence — Prison reads as a first draft of the questions he spent decades refining. The film-within-a-film structure is rough, the despair is unmediated, and that rawness is what makes it worth watching. Stream Prison (1949) online on iFILM.
