Synopsis
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) is a John Ford western you can watch online on iFILM, with John Wayne and cinematography by Winton Hoch that took home the Academy Award — the Monument Valley sunsets here are among the most reproduced images in Hollywood history.
Captain Nathan Brittles has forty-eight hours left before mandatory retirement. His final assignment: escort two women out of the fort to safety, with an intertribal alliance forming in the surrounding hills after a recent defeat has left the warriors looking for a fight. Brittles is no longer a young man. He talks to his wife's grave, he knows most of the enemy chiefs by name, and his approach to conflict leans on patience over firepower.
Ford described this as the middle film of his cavalry trilogy, and it's the most openly elegiac of the three. Wayne underplays everything — it's one of the few roles where he's playing someone who has made peace with being overtaken by time, not fighting it.
