Synopsis
Southern Comfort (1981) is an American action thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Walter Hill directed Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe in a story about a squad of Louisiana National Guardsmen whose weekend exercise in the bayou turns lethal.
The trouble starts small: one soldier fires blank rounds at a group of local Cajuns as a joke. The Cajuns shoot back with live ammunition. From that point nine men with no combat rounds are moving through swamp they cannot read, hunted by people who know every inch of it. Goran Visnjic plays John, and the chain of command dissolves faster than the map. Fred Ward and Peter Coyote round out the unit.
Hill built the film as a deliberate echo of Vietnam — foreign terrain, invisible enemy, institutional authority failing the men on the ground — and left the parallel implicit rather than spoken aloud. That restraint is what gives it staying power four decades later. Stream Southern Comfort (1981) on iFILM.
