Synopsis
The Bedford Incident (1965) is a cold-war war thriller you can watch online on iFILM. A U.S. Navy destroyer prowls the freezing waters off Greenland. A reporter comes aboard for a quick profile and instead gets trapped inside a contest of nerves with no exit.
Captain Eric Finlander, played by Richard Widmark, picks up a Soviet submarine and refuses to let it slip away. The patrol turns into a chase. He drives his crew past exhaustion, the journalist (Sidney Poitier) watches a routine mission curdle into one man's private war, and a rattled young officer waits at the weapons console with his finger far too close to the edge. Everyone senses the same thing: one mistake under this much pressure could light the fuse on something far bigger than a chase.
Director James B. Harris, once Stanley Kubrick's producing partner, keeps it claustrophobic — gray seas, cramped compartments, a tightening pulse. There are no heroic broadsides, just men pushed to breaking. The film rhymes with Dr. Strangelove and rewards anyone who likes their suspense cold, talky and effects-free.
