Synopsis
The Hallelujah Trail (1965) is a big-scale comedy Western from John Sturges you can watch online on iFILM. With a brutal winter coming, the miners of Denver face a drought, so a wagon train rolls out hauling forty barrels of whisky.
Everyone wants the cargo. A cavalry colonel (Burt Lancaster) is ordered to get it through intact, a fierce Temperance League led by a no-nonsense crusader (Lee Remick) means to smash every barrel, the local tribe would happily wet their throats, and the miners will shoot to keep their drink. Add a blinding sandstorm and the whole trail tips into glorious chaos.
Sturges, the man behind The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, swapped tension for satire here — a 134-minute roadshow comedy with a dry narrator and a marching Elmer Bernstein score, backed by Jim Hutton, Donald Pleasence, Martin Landau and Brian Keith. Old-fashioned, wide-open fun. Stream The Hallelujah Trail (1965) online on iFILM.
