Synopsis
Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) is a British psychological thriller directed by Otto Preminger, available to watch online on iFILM. Ann Lake, played by Carol Lynley, drops her young daughter off at a London school on the first day and returns to pick her up a few hours later. The girl is gone. No one on staff remembers seeing her at all.
Inspector Newhouse, played by Laurence Olivier with a quietly unnerving patience, takes the case — and finds nothing. No clothing, no registration record, no witnesses. The investigation begins to tip toward a darker possibility: that Bunny Lake may never have existed outside her mother's mind. Ann's brother Steven, played by Keir Dullea, stays close throughout, and his presence starts to feel less like comfort and more like something to account for.
Otto Preminger shoots in sharp, high-contrast black and white — Dennis Coupe's cinematography keeps the London interiors looking slightly wrong throughout, which is exactly the point. The film is less about the missing child than about what happens when no one believes you. Noël Coward appears as the unsettling landlord and makes every second count.
