Synopsis
Juliet of the Spirits (Giulietta degli spiriti, 1965) is a Federico Fellini fantasy drama you can watch online on iFILM — his first film in color, and one of the most intimate things he made. Giulietta Masina, Fellini's wife, plays Giulietta: a proper middle-aged woman in a beautiful house, married to Giorgio, quietly aware that something has gone wrong without knowing quite what to call it.
A séance cracks something open. Visions start appearing — a glamorous neighbor who treats pleasure as a religion, a grandfather's voice, figures from a Catholic school childhood that left scars. Masina plays the confusion with tremendous stillness; the camera catches her watching rather than reacting, trying to understand a life that has been arranged around everyone else's comfort. Giorgio, meanwhile, is clearly in love with someone else, and the film does not soften that.
Fellini built the film as a waking dream — saturated color, carnival-grotesque guests, no resolution that tidies anything up. It rewards patience and punishes the search for a conventional plot. Stream Juliet of the Spirits (1965) online on iFILM.
