Synopsis
Saturday Night Fever (1977) — watch online on iFILM — is John Badham's landmark drama that turned John Travolta into a star and helped define an entire decade. Tony Manero works a dead-end job at a Brooklyn hardware store all week. On Saturday nights at the 2001 Odyssey disco, he's somebody.
Tony is the best dancer in Bay Ridge — and he knows it. When he partners with Stephanie, a woman angling her way toward Manhattan and a life bigger than the neighborhood, something shifts. She treats the dancefloor as a stepping stone; for Tony it's been the whole destination. The tension between staying comfortable and actually moving forward drives the film harder than any disco beat. Norman Wexman's screenplay drew on a New York Magazine article about real Brooklyn disco culture, and the Bee Gees soundtrack sold north of forty million copies.
What holds up fifty years later: Travolta's physicality is genuine, and the film doesn't flinch from the uglier sides of that world — the violence, the dead ends, the cost of standing still. Stream Saturday Night Fever online on iFILM.
