Looking for Mr. Goodbar
To her father, Theresa was a dutiful daughter. To the children she taught, Theresa brought warmth and hope. To the men she met in bars, Theresa was easy. All kinds of people loved Theresa. Diane Keaton plays Theresa in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
Synopsis
Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) is Richard Brooks' drama you can watch online on iFILM. Diane Keaton plays Theresa — a teacher of deaf kids by day, a regular in singles' bars by night.
Raised under a strict, devout father, Theresa breaks loose chasing a charge her quiet life never gives her. A brief fling with a married man pulls her into Manhattan after dark: discos, booze, pills, and a run of men she picks up and drops one after another. One of them is a jittery Tony, played by a young Richard Gere, and each new face is a shade more dangerous than the last. The double life hands her freedom and walks her toward the edge at the same time.
Brooks adapted Judith Rossner's novel, which itself drew loosely on a real New York case from the early 1970s. Tuesday Weld picked up an Oscar nomination as Theresa's sister. Keaton shot this the same year as Annie Hall, and it's hard to imagine two more opposite roles. A hard, uneasy piece of 1970s filmmaking — definitely not an easy night in.
