Synopsis
House by the River (1950) is a Fritz Lang noir you can watch online on iFILM. Successful novelist Stephen Byrne makes a pass at the family maid; she resists, and in a single moment the struggle turns into murder.
Panicking, Stephen (Louis Hayward) pulls his brother John — quiet, lame, long in love with Stephen's wife — into hiding the body. They sink her in the river by the house, but the tide keeps carrying her back. And Stephen, feeling no remorse, calmly begins steering suspicion toward his brother. His wife Marjorie (Jane Wyatt) studies the man she married a little longer each passing day.
Lang shoots the Victorian house like a trap: dark water, creaking floorboards, shadows climbing the stairs. The German master who made M and Metropolis came to Hollywood and returned to his lifelong subject — guilt that refuses to stay sunk. It's a lesser-known, underrated entry where evil stays charming and unpunished almost to the very end. A small, mean little thriller for anyone digging deep into classic noir.
