Synopsis
The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960) is a German crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It was Fritz Lang's final film — the director of Metropolis and M signing off with the same hypnotic criminal mastermind, Mabuse, he had created decades earlier.
A run of unsolved cases stretches across Europe: murders, kidnappings, thefts. The one link is the Hotel Luxor in Berlin, where every victim had stayed, and where a leftover Nazi surveillance grid watches each room. Inspector Kras is digging into the death of a TV journalist who'd promised explosive revelations, while a blind clairvoyant named Cornelius keeps inserting himself into the case. Gert Fröbe, soon to be Goldfinger, runs the investigation; Peter van Eyck plays an American pulled into the web.
Lang drags the Mabuse figure out of the silent era and into a world of television screens and constant watching, almost predicting our own age of cameras. The film kicked off a string of 1960s sequels and stays required viewing for anyone studying the German thriller. Best for fans of black-and-white noir where the answer hides behind a two-way mirror.
