Joy

Joy (2024) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Ben Taylor and built from a true story most people only know by its result: the first baby ever conceived outside the womb.

The setting is England across the late 1960s and 70s. Nurse Jean Purdy (Thomasin McKenzie) joins forces with scientist Robert Edwards (James Norton) and surgeon Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy) to make pregnancy possible for couples medicine had given up on. Almost everyone pushes back — the church, the press, the government, even fellow doctors. They work out of a small hospital, run out of funding, and watch attempt after attempt fail before anything finally goes right.

The film hands credit back to Purdy, whose role was quietly erased for decades while Edwards collected the Nobel Prize. It's a patient, humane account of a breakthrough, told through stubbornness and exhaustion rather than triumphant speeches. Nighy gives one of his warmest performances in years.
