Synopsis
The Mambo Kings (1992) is Arne Glimcher's music-driven drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. Two Cuban brothers, César and Néstor Castillo, flee Havana for early-1950s New York carrying a suitcase of songs and one shared dream — to make it on the American stage. The younger brother, Néstor, marked Antonio Banderas's Hollywood debut.
César (Armand Assante) chases fame head-on, while Néstor lives on the memory of a woman he left behind and a single unfinished love song. The brothers build a band, work the clubs of Spanish Harlem, and land the break of a lifetime: a cameo on the classic sitcom I Love Lucy. But success has a price, and Néstor's old wound keeps pulling the story toward heartbreak. Cathy Moriarty co-stars, with Latin-jazz great Tito Puente turning up on the bandstand.
Adapted from Oscar Hijuelos's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the film rides less on plot than on the heat of mambo, sweat-soaked dance floors and an immigrant's ache for home. Its song "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" picked up an Oscar nomination. A great watch for anyone who loves 1950s music and bittersweet takes on the American Dream.
