Marooned
Three marooned astronauts. Only 55 minutes left to rescue them. While the whole world watches and waits...
Synopsis
Marooned (1969) is John Sturges' American science-fiction drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Three astronauts finish months aboard an orbiting lab and get ready to come home — then the capsule's de-orbit thrusters refuse to fire, and there's no way down.
On the ground, program chief Charles Keith, played by Gregory Peck, watches the dwindling air supply and does the brutal arithmetic. The first instinct is to leave the crew up there. Instead NASA gambles on a rescue launch, even as a hurricane crawls toward the pad. Up above, commander Jim Pruett (Richard Crenna), pilot Buzz Lloyd (Gene Hackman) and Clayton Stone (James Franciscus) slowly run out of oxygen and argue over whether one man should die so two can live.
Sturges shoots space almost without music and without heroics — quiet radio chatter, ticking gauges, the faces of people who already know the numbers. The film took home the Oscar for its visual effects, three years before Apollo 13 turned this exact scenario real. Slow, patient, engineering-minded filmmaking rather than spectacle.
