Synopsis
Big Wednesday (1978) is a California coming-of-age drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by John Milius. Three surfers — Matt (Jan-Michael Vincent), Jack (William Katt), and Ogre (Gary Busey) — grow up together on the same stretch of Malibu beach through the 1960s and into the Vietnam era. The film spans about twelve years of their lives, which is a long time to spend watching people drift apart.
Matt drinks and withdraws. Jack gets drafted. Ogre stays, in his way. Milius wrote this partly from his own memories of those beaches, and it shows: the friendships feel specific rather than symbolic, the losses accumulate without announcement, and the ocean is treated as a place these men actually understand rather than a backdrop for drama.
The film builds toward one day — a legendary swell that the local surfing community has been waiting for — and the reunion it forces. Surfing here is the vocabulary for everything the three of them can't say directly. For a film about young men who never quite grew up, it ends up being deeply honest about what that costs.
