The Discord

La Zizanie (1978) — released as The Discord — is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Claude Zidi and starring Louis de Funès opposite Annie Girardot. Guillaume runs a factory that builds air-purification machines while cheerfully polluting the surrounding area. His wife Bernadette tends her flower garden and stays out of his business. That changes the moment he decides to expand production into their private estate — her garden included.

Bernadette strikes back. She launches a campaign against him and eventually runs for mayor of the town against her own husband. What follows is a perfectly timed escalation of domestic and civic warfare, with de Funès playing his usual mode — the blustering, self-important man who keeps losing ground to forces he refuses to understand — and Girardot matching him beat for beat with a far cooler kind of comic timing.

The pairing of two of French cinema's biggest names from that era is what lifts the film. It's not de Funès at his most unhinged, but the interplay between the two leads gives it genuine energy.
