Synopsis
Hannie Caulder (1971) is Burt Kennedy's British-made Western, available to watch online on iFILM. Raquel Welch stars as a frontier woman whose whole life is wiped out in a single night by the three Clemens brothers — her husband murdered, her home burned, herself left for dead. Revenge becomes the only road open to her.
She can't shoot, so she hires bounty hunter Thomas Price, played by Robert Culp, to turn her into a killer. Cold training takes the place of grief; a revolver takes the place of tears. Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin and Jack Elam play the brothers as a trio that's both pathetic and deadly, while Christopher Lee shows up as the gunsmith who forges Hannie her custom Colt.
This was one of the first Westerns to hand the gun to a woman, arriving ahead of the decade's wave of female-led revenge films. Kennedy keeps it dry and unsentimental, shot across the Spanish deserts where Leone made his spaghetti Westerns.
