Synopsis

The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) is a Cecil B. DeMille spectacle you can watch online on iFILM. Shot on location with the real Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the film stars Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, and James Stewart — and every performer, animal, and tent is genuine, not a studio fabrication.

Circus manager Brad Braden (Heston) signs flamboyant trapeze star The Great Sebastian to fill seats, bumping his own girlfriend Holly (Hutton) from the prized center ring spot. The two acrobats then wage a high-wire rivalry that keeps pushing dangerously further with every show. Meanwhile, a mysterious clown named Buttons (Stewart) travels with the troupe and never, under any circumstances, removes his makeup — a detail that quietly builds into something far darker than the sawdust and sequins suggest.

DeMille took the whole production on the road: over 1,400 circus performers, hundreds of animals, 60 railroad cars. The film took home the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 1953 Oscars — a result that still stirs debate, given the competition. For fans of old Hollywood's most unabashedly big-canvas filmmaking, it's a one-of-a-kind time capsule. Stream The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) online on iFILM.
