Synopsis
Spirits of the Dead (1968) — watch online on iFILM. Three films from Edgar Allan Poe, each assigned to a different European director: Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, Federico Fellini.
Vadim opens with a countess (Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda share the segment with Peter Fonda) whose obsession with a black stallion ends in mutual destruction — lush, gothic, airless. Malle gives Alain Delon a man pursued his entire life by his own double; the card game they finally play settles it all at once. Fellini closes the anthology: Terence Stamp as a washed-out British actor drifting through night-time Rome, where a little girl with a ball may or may not be the Devil. His segment is the one that stays.
What all three understood: Poe's horror doesn't need gore. It needs the sensation that something is fundamentally wrong, and no one in the room will say it. Stream Spirits of the Dead (1968) online on iFILM.
