Synopsis
Atlantic City (1980) is a Canadian-French crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Louis Malle. The film arrives at an inflection point: Atlantic City's casinos have just opened, the old boardwalk order is crumbling, and everyone is scrambling for a piece of the new money. Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon play two people caught in that churn.
Lou is a small-time former hood running errands for a mobster's widow, still nursing a mythology about who he used to be. Sally works in an oyster bar by night, scrubbing her hands with lemon juice, dreaming of a dealer's job on the Riviera. When a young drifter blows in carrying cocaine stolen from the mob — and the mob shows up to collect — Lou gets the chance to be the dangerous man he always imagined himself to be.
Malle built the whole film on the gap between self-image and reality. Lancaster took a César for the role and landed an Academy Award nomination; the film itself competed for five Oscars, including Best Picture. Stream Atlantic City (1980) online on iFILM.
