Synopsis

The Fire Within (Le Feu follet, 1963) is available to watch online — a French drama directed by Louis Malle, adapted from Drieu La Rochelle's semi-autobiographical novel. Alain Leroy has just left a Versailles clinic where he was treated for alcoholism. Doctors say he's fine. He disagrees.

Over the course of one day he drifts through Paris, calling on old friends, former lovers, and familiar faces from a wasted decade. Maurice Ronet plays him without a shred of self-pity — a man quietly taking stock, testing whether anyone or anything might tip the scales toward staying. The meetings go nowhere good.

Malle strips the film of every narrative crutch: no dramatic revelation, no last-minute reprieve. Erik Satie's piano score plays against the silences and the camera stays close. It's a film that earns the right to its ending by never once cheating. Stream The Fire Within (1963) online on iFILM.
