Synopsis
Black Moon (1975) is Louis Malle's surrealist fever dream, free to watch online on iFILM. A war between the sexes has gone global, and armed bands of men and women gun each other down on country roads. A teenage girl named Lily flees the slaughter by car and veers off into the backwoods.
That's where ordinary reality quits. She stumbles onto an isolated manor where pigs sit at the dinner table, a cat picks out tunes on the piano, a talking unicorn wanders the grass, and a bedridden old woman keeps in touch with the outside world through a crackling radio. A mute brother and sister live there too, along with a pack of naked children chasing a hog around the yard. Nothing resolves. The film just drifts deeper into dream, dread and heavy erotic symbolism.
Malle made this right after Lacombe, Lucien and pitched it himself as an apocalyptic Alice in Wonderland. The cinematography comes from Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman's longtime collaborator, whose cold light turns a French farmhouse into something genuinely uneasy. It explains nothing on purpose — strictly for viewers happy to surrender to pure image over plot. Stream Black Moon (1975) online on iFILM.
