Synopsis
Viva Maria! (1965) is Louis Malle's adventure comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Two women sharing one name, a traveling circus, and an accidental revolution in turn-of-the-century Central America.
The year is 1907. Maria the younger (Brigitte Bardot), daughter of an Irish bomb-maker, joins a circus troupe after her father is killed and meets a singer also named Maria (Jeanne Moreau). During her debut, a wardrobe mishap supposedly invents the striptease on the spot. Soon the pair drift into a peasant uprising against a local dictator.
Malle put France's two biggest stars in the same frame and blended western, musical, farce and adventure into one playful package. The film treats history as a lark, clearly smitten with its leading duo. It's a good pick for fans of 1960s French cinema or anyone curious about the Bardot-Moreau pairing.
