Director Jim Wilson keeps the tone dry and affectionate without leaning on melodrama. Skeet Ulrich and Christian Kane play the misfit cowboys who drove their horse to Churchill Downs on faith and a shoestring; William Devane supplies the voice of someone who has seen too much to be easily impressed.
