Synopsis
Joy of Fatherhood (Vaterfreuden, 2014) is a German romantic comedy from Matthias Schweighöfer, available to watch online on iFILM. Felix is a thirty-year-old bachelor who pedals around Munich dodging commitment, while every friend he has is buried under nappies and family routine. Schweighöfer both directed the film and took the lead role.
The carefree life collapses when his hapless younger brother crashes at his place with an exotic pet — and one bite leaves Felix unable to ever father a child the usual way. Only then does it dawn on him that he wanted kids after all. His single lead: a sperm sample he donated years ago. That kicks off a frantic hunt for the stranger who is already carrying his baby. The lively cast includes Isabell Polak, Friedrich Mücke and Emilia Schüle.
It's a light, slightly crude, fast-moving farce in the vein of Schweighöfer's other hits like What a Man. No pretensions to depth here, just charm and a brisk pace.
