Synopsis
Quartet (2012) is a British comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, marking the directorial debut of Dustin Hoffman. The film stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon as residents of Beecham House, a retirement home for opera veterans, where every autumn brings a gala concert in honour of Verdi's birthday.
The equilibrium of the house cracks when Jean arrives — former prima donna, still every inch the diva, and once married to Reggie, who lives down the hall. Their history is complicated, she refuses to sing, and the concert organiser Cedric Hobson needs all four of them on stage together for the first time in decades.
Hoffman keeps the tone warm without going soft: Smith navigates between wounded pride and guarded longing, Connolly supplies most of the laughs, and Collins brings a quiet dignity to a character quietly losing her memory. The film is most affecting when it treats its characters as people with enormous pasts rather than charming old folks. Stream Quartet (2012) on iFILM.
