Synopsis
R (2010) is a Danish crime drama directed by Tobias Lindholm and Michael Noer that you can watch online on iFILM. The crew spent months filming inside an actual Danish high-security prison — the result looks and feels nothing like a conventional prison movie. No score swelling under key scenes, no redemption arc signposted from the first act.
Rune is young, cocky, and serving time for assault. Placed in the toughest ward, he learns fast that status here runs on racial lines: Danish inmates on one side, Arab inmates on the other, and an unspoken economy of debt and loyalty governing both. Pilou Asbæk — later known internationally as Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones — makes his feature debut here, and the performance is almost uncomfortably naturalistic. His unlikely alliance with Rachid, a young Muslim prisoner played by Dulfi Al-Jabouri, gives the film its center without resolving into easy solidarity.
Lindholm went on to write the screenplay for Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt and direct A Hijacking — the controlled, clinical eye he applies to systems under pressure is already fully formed here. R is the kind of prison film that stays with you because it refuses to let either the institution or its inmates off the hook. Stream R online on iFILM.
