Synopsis
Goodbye Bafana (2007) is a historical drama from director Bille August, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows the white jailer assigned to guard South Africa's most dangerous prisoner.
James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes) grew up among Xhosa speakers and understands the language fluently — which is exactly why the apartheid regime puts him on Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert) to eavesdrop and report. Twenty years on Robben Island do something the state never planned: the guard starts to question everything he was raised to believe. At home, his wife Gloria (Diane Kruger) struggles to recognize the man he becomes.
Drawing on Gregory's own memoir, August frames this not as a Mandela biopic but as the slow awakening of an ordinary racist, seen from the wrong side of the cell door. The two-time Palme d'Or winner keeps it quiet and personal. A good fit if Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom landed for you. Stream Goodbye Bafana (2007) online on iFILM.
