Synopsis
The Phantom of the Opera (1989) is the gory horror retelling of the classic, now streaming online on iFILM. Forget the gentle musical. Here a composer trades his soul to the devil for the crowd's adoration and pays with a ruined face. Robert Englund, fresh off playing Freddy Krueger, takes the masked killer.
A young singer named Christine Day digs up the scorched score of a forgotten opera, and the music yanks her back to Victorian London. There the disfigured maestro fixes on her as his one true muse, and he'll carve his way through anyone who threatens her rise. He kills by flaying his victims, so the old romance is stretched thin over a full-blooded slasher. Director Dwight Little plays it dark and unapologetic, with a young Bill Nighy and Molly Shannon turning up in small parts.
