Synopsis
The Men (1950) is Fred Zinnemann's postwar drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It marks Marlon Brando's screen debut: at 26, he plays Lieutenant Ken Wilcheck, left paralyzed from the waist down by a wartime bullet.
Ken lands in a veterans' hospital ward for paraplegics and shuts everyone out. He refuses to see his fiancée Ellen, snaps at the staff, and rejects the idea that a life in a wheelchair is a life at all. Dr. Brock skips the pity. Instead he surrounds Ken with the men in the next beds — Norm, Leo and Angel — who bicker, joke and claw their way back toward something normal. Teresa Wright plays Ellen, willing to wait yet unsure how to reach a man busy burying himself alive.
Brando spent weeks living in a real veterans' hospital before shooting, and that homework shows in every scene: no grandstanding, just coiled anger and fear. Zinnemann filmed it almost like a documentary, casting actual patients in the ward. It's a hard, honest film about coming home from war that refuses easy comfort.
