Synopsis
Story of a Love Affair (Cronaca di un amore, 1950) is Michelangelo Antonioni's feature debut, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Paola, the idle wife of a wealthy Milanese industrialist, has no idea her husband has quietly hired a detective to dig into her past.
The inquiry stirs up what should have stayed buried. Her old lover Guido drifts back into her life, and the affair flares up all over again. The closer the two get, the more openly they circle the same idea — being rid of the husband who stands between them. Lucia Bosè and Massimo Girotti push this melodrama right to the edge of noir.
Even in his first feature Antonioni walks away from the neorealism of the era toward what would become his signature: long gliding camera moves, dead air, the estrangement between people who supposedly love each other.
