Synopsis
Rio Grande (1950) is John Ford's cavalry western with John Wayne, free to watch online on iFILM. On a remote Texas outpost near the Mexican border, Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke holds a thin, under-supplied command together while Apache raiding parties press the frontier settlers.
A fresh batch of recruits arrives, and one of them is Jeff — the son Yorke hasn't laid eyes on in fifteen years. There will be no favors. Frontier soldiering is brutal, dusty work, and the boy wants to earn his place on his own. Then Kathleen Yorke turns up: the wife Kirby walked away from long ago, determined to pull their son out of uniform and, maybe, win her husband back. Maureen O'Hara plays her, and her sparring with Wayne is the engine of the whole picture.
This closes out Ford's loose cavalry trilogy after Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. You get the hallmarks: hard open country, trail ballads from the Sons of the Pioneers, and a family drama buried under military duty. One for viewers who like their westerns slow, weathered and classic. Stream Rio Grande (1950) online on iFILM.
